Pastor Francis Chan wonders what it would be like to be a caterpillar. He thinks it would be strange to live on one tiny strip of dirt as a fat caterpillar, take a long nap, and wake up with wings and be able to fly as to be a beautiful butterfly.

“Have you ever seen a butterfly crawling around in the dirt?” he asked at Wednesday morning’s General Session to illustrate how a person transforms radically when he becomes a Christian.

Pastor Chan is baffled, he said, when people tell him that they don’t believe that even God could help them through their problems and struggles. “I don’t know what your issues are, but the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of us,” he said. Jesus told His disciples that He was going to go so that this Holy Spirit would be coming for the advantage of the disciples. And Pastor Chan said that whoever benefits us more than Jesus has to be pretty awesome.

After we’re transformed through this Spirit, we have the ability to impact others by showing them the glory of Christ. Pastor Chan asked, “Have you ever pulled that off, where you shine your light in such a way that people don’t praise you but they praise your Father in heaven?”

He said that this is evident in his own ministry, that people who knew him as a student, even in seminary, cannot believe now that he is a pastor. His siblings ask him why people bother to even listen to him.

He started his talk with an introduction of Compassion International, one of the ministries partnering with JAMA at this conference. Compassion works around the world with children in need by clothing and feeding them, educating them in schools, and teaching them about Jesus. Pastor Chan said that he learned from Compassion representatives on his visit to Africa that 29,000 children under the age of 5 will die today. “Is my soul more valuable than one of those children who will die today?” he asked.

When the crowd answered that their souls are not more valuable than these kids’, Pastor Chan asked, “Then why do we spend so much on ourselves? Why do I think I need to preserve myself?”

He read Proverbs 30:7, which is a prayer asking God to “give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.” This prayer goes against our natural instincts. “It’s not an American prayer,” he said. “It’s a Christian prayer.”

He then shared his struggles to separate his Christian values from his American and Chinese values, that he should not live by what he learned in church or from his culture but from the Bible itself, and nothing else. Only then, he said, will he be able to live as God wants him to.

Choirs of angels rejoiced in heaven last night as tens of people all over the auditorium in the JAMA General Session received the gift of salvation and committed their lives to Christ. Pastor Stephen Chong prayed for them as he ended his sermon about sin, a topic that he said makes pastors very unpopular if they preach about it too often.

Referencing Isaiah 58, he told the crowd, “You better get your act together.” Only then, he said, will God be able to work in and through us.

He described the difference between idol worship and idle worship, and how both are detriment in the Christian walk. We choose idols over God when we start to love his blessings more or as much as we love Him. “We depend on human things, and they will fail you simply because they are human,” he said. “But God says, ‘I will never fail you.’”

Idle worship occurs when we stop at worship because we’re not focused on God. And because we’re focused on ourselves even during worship, we do not serve our communities as we should. Even with so many mega churches in the world today, hundreds of people suffer every 15 minutes.

Before Pastor Chong walked onto the stage, Jirani Children’s Choir from Kenya and Danny Oerteli with the New Awakening Band prepared the hearts of the worshipers through energetic praise. And after Pastor Chong’s altar call, over five thousand pairs of hands lifted in worship as Pastor Jim Cymbala asked all of the attendees to stand in praise with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Singers. “God inhabits the praises of His people,” Cymbala said. “God sits down on His throne and gives gifts when people are praising.”

Finally, Pastor James Byun prayed over those who stayed as he encouraged them to seek God earnestly.

June 30, 2008
by Jason Lim

“God never intended for the Bible to be given and studied so that we can answer test questions or beat our neighbors in Bible trivia…God gave us the Bible so that our lives would be changed, and we would continue the mission of Jesus.”

What makes Zimmerman different is his ability to combine both “cutting edge methodology” he received from Campus Crusaders, and the theological depth from the seminary. To this day, he believes that the only way for practical theology to be relevant is to allow the two practices of teaching in seminary and doing ministry to work symbiotically. Zimmerman emphatically noted that one cannot teach practical theology at Biblical Seminary unless they are actually doing the work.

But as discussions of practical theology started to develop, the inevitable question seemed to lurk its ugly head; what is wrong with the institutional Church, and how could we fix it?

“I think the institutional Church has some problems because…just like all institutions, the number one priority is now survival…there is not a lot of energy, time, money, facilities to put into play missionally, because it is kind of all about us.”

Furthermore, Zimmerman suggests that another reason for the problem with the institutionalized Church is the fact that churches everywhere are essentially “creating their own universes”. Churches continue to create separate sports leagues, schools and businesses, and this takes them out of their community context. But the way churches are supposed to function, epitomized by Jesus’ ministry, is to include the community. This severance from community ultimately changes the mission of the church to have the outside community assimilate to this alternate universe.

However bleak the situation may look, Zimmerman, being the practical theologian that he is, offers up an antidote to this poisonous and perpetual plight.

“Let’s become good neighbors to those in the community rather than presuming that we know what they need, develop programs and tell them ‘you need to this’. Let’s build relationships, love them, serve them, and minister to them, so that we bring value to the community rather than…[drain] the community, which is a lot of what churches are…So how can we get away from that?…move into the neighborhood. Isn’t that what Jesus did?”

As simple as the answer might sound, it’s practically impossible. Perhaps there are immediate answers, but as the real church, the body of Christ, we must not lose hope and maintain our faith that through events like New Awakening, God may transform the Church.

This annual conference has meshed together thousands of people from different walks of life to inspire and to ignite revival in America. This year’s conference holds a deeper significance; this year marks the 150-year anniversary of the pinnacle of the Third Great Awakening.

JAMA did not choose Philadelphia as the location for this year’s conference merely for great cheese steaks (although this could arguably be a legitimate secondary reason) nor did they pick this site for great weather (because the suffocating humidity is almost infuriating). It just so happens that this was one of the cities where revivalistic fervor spread 150 years ago.

It began with six nameless college and post-college men in Philadelphia. At first only a few attended, but soon the revival grew, leading to a four-month tent revival where 150,000 people attended.

We commemorate events like these because of its importance in history. While we should honor the believers that earnestly sought out revival and celebrate an era of rejuvenation, this memory is ultimately celebrated because it is merely a preview for the greater things to come. The embers that started the inferno that was the Third Great Awakening were six anonymous believers. It is not so outlandish that there can be another great revival similar to the one that started with these men in history. There is somewhat a misconstrued idea of revival, and there are many reasons for the lack of a revival. Many of us have allowed complacency of our faith to percolate throughout our mind set. Another portion are cynical to “emotional revivals”, and therefore are found with arms crossed and brows furled. Whatever the symptom is, the fact of the matter remains; this nation, especially the Christians that need to take ownership, has overslept. I believe it is time to go out and wake everybody up, for we are on the cusp of another Great Awakening. Are you ready?

Dr. John C. Kim, who saw the need for repentance based on revival in America, dreamed of a movement so knee-buckling that the nation has no choice but to fall on its knee and restore the once Christian nation.

Most of us understand the goal of this conference, but the movement known as JAMA gets inevitably shoved into the unfair label of an organization. From the beginning, Dr. Kim was adamant that JAMA be labeled as a movement rather than an organization.

“JAMA is not an organization…it’s a movement with the Holy Spirit moving us. It’s like a dandelion. When dandelions grow and eventually bloom…[and] when the [wind of the] Holy Spirit blows…[the seeds] go to the [next destination]… JAMA is not someone’s ownership. Everyone who believes is a co-owner. So we don’t hold them here [at the conference]. Once they’ve been really awakened with prayer, repentance, transformation and revival, they must go to their churches, their families, their communities, their schools, and their marketplaces, so that they become a catalyst…Once we have a conference like this, once we have training, we don’t hold them. Go! We send them to all of the places. It’s like dandelions. It’s a movement.”

Because it is a movement, it is dynamic and constantly sending out “dandelion seeds” all across America and around the world. And because JAMA is a movement that aims for revival, the preconceived notions and myths of revivals are not effective in this model.

JAMA is based on 2 Chronicles 7:14: “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land”. This manifesto, originally directed towards Solomon and God’s chosen people, becomes relative towards all those that call themselves Christians. This process, which consists of humility, genuine prayer, the pursuit of God’s face, and a decision to abandon the world, is JAMA. Like dandelions that grow and bloom, JAMA will continue to move as God moves; and as we obey, God has promised a revival to make all things new.

With the Christian rock band Delirious opening us up, the massive Hall was packed with passionate people celebrating and worshipping together! It was a great feeling to be in one place while being united with many of our Korean and Korean-American brethren under the banner of: our Lord, Jesus Christ!

Dr. John C. Kim challenged the attendees– to repent of the sins of America, following the footsteps of Jeremiah Lanphier as he prayed for a revival in the city of New York. Dr. Kim welcomed people from all around the world, including England, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, and Hungary.

According to Dr. Zimmerman, like a fashion show, we must wear the clothes of the Kingdom and walk the runway of life to showcase to the world of the future to come. We have a tendency to forget, but we must remember these three thing order to experience and extend the glory of God: grace, community, and service. We must do this by stepping away from performance-based living. We all fall short. We are all "as if" damaged goods.

Pastor Stephen Chong called everyone to a public and private repentance on the middle stage, which was followed by a skit. A clip was played about the difference between the cruise ship and battleship approach in looking for a church. It was a powerful clip that encouraged everyone to take the Kingdom perspective.

The beautiful Kenyan world-traveling children’s singing group Jirani blessed us with traditional African songs, even in the Korean language!

Reverend Nam Soo Kim preached that we must begin to see ONE Church, ONE Spirit, and ONE Christ. We must imitate children, being simple, pure, humble, and not costly. We need to be open and embracing diversity among God’s people, His creations, and accept them as our community, so we can work together to glorify His name.

We were truly blessed by the continuous pouring of God’s Spirit and blessings from some of the greatest men and women of God ministering and encouraging us today.

Dear Parents and Guardians of JAMA Upper & Lower Kids,

Welcome to JAMA Kids!
We are very excited to be here this week as the children are invited to see, touch, and hear God’s love at JAMA kids. There are a few things that we expect from you during our JAMA Kids track to help ensure a safe and healthy environment for all children.

Please see below for these guidelines.

◆ BE ON TIME! Parents must pick up and drop off child at appropriate times

◆ You must sign IN and OUT each time.

○ Drop-off times
▪ 9:00 am
▪ 1:30 pm
▪ 7:00 pm

○ Pick up times
▪ 12:00 pm
▪ 5:00 pm
▪ 9:30 pm

● Provide Emergency contacts on the back of your child’s name tag and also when
signing in at JAMA KIDS.
● Please inform the staff at JAMA KIDS If your child has food allergies, your
child will receive a red sticker on his/her name tag.

◆ TO BRING!
○ Pre-K
▪ Snack (due to risk of food allergies we ask of you to prepare snacks for your own child)
▪ Additional clothes, blanket and pillow for nap times
○ Lower & Upper
▪ One time light snack & drinks will be provided between lunch and dinner.

◆ EAT BREAKFAST!
○ Good breakfast will promote energy and concentration energy while fighting off less attentive and sluggish participation.

If your child has special physical or developmental needs, please let us know so that we can prepare to receive your child with appropriate individual care and attention.

We will be taking a walking field trip to the Liberty Bell (about 10-15 min walk) on Wednesday, July 2nd. There will be a permission slip to be signed when you drop off your child at JAMA Kids.
We pray that this will be a time of blessing for you and your child.
A BIG thank you in advance!

Dear Parents and Guardians of JAMA Pre-K,

● 매 시간마다 IN and OUT을 sign하셔야 합니다.

○ Drop-off times
▪ 9:00 am
▪ 1:30 pm
▪ 7:00 pm

○ Pick up times
▪ 12:00 pm
▪ 5:00 pm
▪ 9:30 pm

God Bless
